Bachelor Phase
The bachelor phase covers semesters three to six of the course in which a student chooses a specialism, a particular area of study on which to focus. Options available to students of Business Studies are:
- Business Administration
- Economics
- Business Computing
- Business Education (Course Track I)
- Business Education (Course Track II)
Each specialism consists of core courses (usually covering set topics) and a choice of options that each deal with a subject in greater depth (several options are available). There are also additional courses which all students of Economics must take together. A description of the courses (modules) to be taken for each of the specialisms can be found in the Module Handbook .
Within nine weeks of finishing the bachelor phase, students must submit a bachelor’s thesis, an independent academic piece of work. Preparation for this thesis and academic supervision is provided in an accompanying seminar.
As with students on the IBS course, students of Business Studies may spend one or two semesters during the bachelor phase at a university abroad. In addition to the possibility of taking part in an exchange at one of the more than 70 partner universities in Europe, America and Asia, students can also organize their study period abroad themselves as a “freemover“. It is possible to gain credits for courses taken at universities abroad with the approval of your department. Further information on studying abroad can be obtained from the International Relations Office.
The ‘Business Education’ specialism is slightly different from the others in that there are two separate course tracks from which to choose. Course track I focuses entirely on Economics, whereas course track II is a dual subject course. Students who intend to become teachers at vocational schools (“Berufsschulen”) can teach their second subject in addition to economics, once they have also successfully completed the master’s degree.
